I plan to be reading The Shining while I'm there. I have never read it, so how perfect is this opportunity? I believe I'll stake out the lobby for a bit to read.
The idea of doing this inspired me to imagine other ideal book/vacation combinations.
+
Arches National Park and Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey. This one seemed pretty obvious, since the book is mostly set there, but it is a wonderful read and a beautiful place.
+
The Beach (anywhere) and A Salty Piece of Land by Jimmy Buffett. I read this book on a beach, and it made me want to stay there forever and never leave.
+
The English Countryside and Pride and Prejudice (actually pretty much anything by Jane Austen). The photo above is actually a stop on a Jane Austen tour. If I was a guided tour kind of person, that seems like one I'd want to do.
+
Prince Edward Island and Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. This is the obvious choice for a vacation to PEI. They also have many Anne-themed events and tours. I know this because my cousin and I have been planning a trip there for years.
+
A long train trip and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling for many obvious reasons. Fun fact: Rowling thought of the idea for Harry Potter while riding on a train.
+
A crazy road trip and On The Road, by Jack Kerouac. Seems appropriate, right?
+
The Yukon wilderness (in the winter, of course) and The Call of the Wild by Jack London. Ok, you probably won't be vacationing in the Yukon anytime soon, but I really like this book.
+
An Alaskan, Arctic, or Antarctic Cruise and The Terror by Dan Simmons. Okay, maybe not, but that's a really compelling book. I would read it on such a cruise, but I'm weird like that. This is also an option for your delightful Yukon wilderness vacation.Any good book/vacation combo ideas?
Ooh, this is fun! I'm trying to think of other fun ones, but my brain is broken.
ReplyDeleteIt's addictive once you start thinking of them. I have a few more lined up in my head so there will be a second installment at some point.
ReplyDeleteoooh soooo cooool.
ReplyDeleteand you've never read the shining!!?? i'm envious for your experience. it's a good ride.
and some faulkner would be great for a trip down south...
or Farenheit 451 if you plan on heading to the future any time soon. :)
What a fun post, Jen! I'd never thought to do this before, but now I'm going to have to think about it!
ReplyDeleteShawnacy - I really hope the future is nothing like Farenheit 451, but I would love to travel there ;-) I've only read a handful of Stephen King, but I like his old stuff.
ReplyDeleteMandy - I've never done it before, except for reading A Salty Piece of Land on a beach vacation, which was mostly coincidental because my dad gave it to me to read. I really want to read Harry Potter on a train now.

ReplyDeleteSuch a fun post!!!!! Just seeing that photo of the Stanley Hotel gives me chills...but, nevertheless, it sounds like such a cool idea!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure a movie/vacation combo would be more fun, just because I read a lot when I go on vacation, so the idea makes more sense to me. That's a good suggestion, though, random spammy comment.
ReplyDelete@suzanne - thanks! I had fun with it. Look for a second installment. I'm already working on it!
